Nonprofit Boards Role

Nonprofit boards are crucial in closing the gap between an organization and its community. The board sets the goals, values, and mission for the non-profit. It also has a crucial oversight and accountability obligation. The board must be able to monitor how well the organization is fulfilling its mission and achieving its objectives. It must devise fundraising and organizational strategies and provide financial oversight.

It must keep a close eye on the programs and services provided, how people are impacted by those programs. This requires continuous monitoring that will allow the board to make adjustments whenever necessary. Financial oversight entails the review and approval of budgets, and ensuring that the organization is within its budget and that it complies with all financial regulations. The board is obligated to treat the assets of the organization as if they were their own and to avoid making a risky investment.

Fundraising is an important element of the duties of the board and it’s often up to board members to put on their apron. It is important that the board receives regular accurate and reliable reports on the progress and outcomes of different fundraising campaigns. This will allow them make better decisions.

Many boards delegate management responsibility to an internal leader, which is typically a chief executive officer (CEO). The Board is responsible for selecting the CEO and establishing the compensation and giving annual evaluations to the CEO and each of the board members. The Board must also establish the opportunity for training and orientation for current and new board members to help them in their growth.
